A preacher visited an old lady from his congregation. As he sat on the sofa he noticed a big bowl of peanuts on the coffee table. “Okay if I have a few?” he asked. “No not at all.” They chatted for an hour and when the preacher stood to leave, he noticed that instead of eating a few peanuts, he’d emptied most of the bowl. “I’m really sorry for eating all your peanuts, I meant to eat just a few,” he said. “Oh, that’s okay,” she replied. “Ever since I lost my teeth, all I can do is suck the chocolate from them anyway.”

When we look at things in this world do, we take them at face value, choices we make, are they based on emotion, feelings, and how good things look. We can so easily find ourselves in a situation that we never bargained for.

Genesis 3:9-11 (NKJV)

Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

1.Sugar & Spice and everything Nice

In life, we hear many voices, and which voice we choose to listen to is extremely important. We all know the account of Eve being tempted by the serpent. She was deceived by what the enemy told her. And all it took was one word to plant that seed of doubt in her mind.

Genesis 3:1 (GW)

The snake was more clever than all the wild animals the Lord God had made. He asked the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must never eat the fruit of any tree in the garden’?”

When he used the word really, and he probably changed his voice and made it subtle and more appealing, he set in motion the chain of events that would see him gain the upper hand. Eve became like butter in his hand.

And so, she decided that it wasn’t wrong to disobey God, it was actually good, because she would be wise just like God. And here in itself lies the problem friends. It can literally take just a single word that can throw us and our lives into a catastrophic downward spiral.

We live in a world that is full of deception, where sin and evil are sugar coated and put in exciting colorful wrappers and we fall for it. That is the problem with sin and going against what God requires of us, the enemy sugar coats everything and tells us how good this will be for us.

We can have all the money in the world it will just mean that you don’t get to go to church on a Sunday. It’s a small price to pay.

Young people we can have any girl or guy you want, just do what your flesh wants you to do. God understands that you are young.

Here’s the biggest deception of them all friends. You accepted Jesus once when you were 15 years old, live your life, you can never loose your salvation. You see this morning; everything becomes ok and acceptable.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 (GW)

13 People who brag like this are false apostles. They are dishonest workers, since they disguise themselves as Christ’s apostles. 14 And no wonder, even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it’s not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants who have God’s approval. In the end they will get what they deserve.

We can so easily find ourselves in the same situation as Eve, and when we are presented with something that is made of sugar and spice and everything nice, we fall into this trap. We are taken in by our flesh and the need to please our flesh, that we fall for anything that man tells us is good for us.

Jeremiah 9:6 (NKJV)

Your dwelling place is in the midst of deceit;
Through deceit they refuse to know Me,” says the Lord.

One day Good and Evil met on the seashore. They said to one another, “Let us bath in the sea.” Then they disrobed and swam.

After a while, Evil came out and put on the garment of Good and walked away.

When Good came ashore, she could not find her true garment. To hide her nakedness, she had no choice but to robe herself with the garment of Evil and walk away.

The is the world we live in today, where evil becomes good and good becomes evil.

Isaiah 5:20 (NKJV)

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter” (Isaiah 5:20).

Luke 11:35 (NLT)

“Make sure that the light you think you have is not actually darkness”

2.Deception of Nakedness

In order to understand this issue of the deception of nakedness, we need to go back to Genesis 2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

You see, this was the way they were created, perfect, without sin. And the bible says that they were not ashamed. The thought that they were naked probably never even crossed their minds, they did not understand that it was to be clothed, that was all they knew, and it didn’t bother them.

Fast forward to Genesis 3:1010 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

Now suddenly, they find that they need to hide themselves from God, because they were naked. Adam never says to God, we sinned against you, we disobeyed, we didn’t listen to you God. No, he goes straight to the point, I was naked, I was afraid, I was fearful, I didn’t know what to do. So, I hid. What’s interesting to note that after Adams response, God askes him a very important question, who told you?

God understood that Adam had sinned, and he was not caught off guard, O no this man has sinned, what am I going to do now. No God already had a plan for the price of sin to be paid. And that was Jesus, but God had something else that was probably even more serious at that time (and I am not downplaying sin do not get me wrong) that bothered him. This was what Adam said, “I was naked and afraid, and I hid” at that point Adam hid because he was ashamed, he was feeling unworthy, he was feeling that God would not want him. He was feeling naked.

He was afraid, because now he understood what he had done, he understood the seriousness of the sin he had committed. Round one to the serpent. There is something else that the serpent achieved when he tempted Eve and she fell for it. He got them to doubt the love of God.

You see although they were naked all along, they were clothed in the righteousness of God, they did not see themselves as naked, as undeserving as unworthy. Because they were created in the image of God. That is what sin does, it condemns us, it strips us off our righteousness in God, it strips us of the perfection that we were created in and it shows our nakedness without Christ.

Now that sin has come in, there is shame and fear. This is sometimes us friends, God has made us perfect and sometimes we feel insecure, we feel unwanted, unloved, ashamed. We feel naked. Its as though God has stripped us of the beauty in which we were created, we feel that we don’t deserve to be alive, and what do we do, we run and hide from God, and this is exactly what the enemy wants.

He plants these thoughts in our mind and when we water these thoughts, we end up like Adam & Eve, we run and hide from God.

Deception does not come overnight; it is drip fed into our lives in small doses, over a long period of time. Graham Cooke Developing Your Prophetic Gifting

So why didn’t God focus on the sin, and give judgement, why did He ask the question who told you that you were naked?

You see, its because unless we know that God loves us, that he does not want us to  live in shame, to live in fear to live in regret, to live a life that has been stripped away through deception. We will never be able to come to the point of accepting Jesus as Lord, and repenting.

We will always feel unworthy. But the devil knew that, he knew that if he causes Adam & Eve to hide and be fearful of the punishment of God and be ashamed, and unworthy he would have won. Rick Pendleton writes this account of a possible conversation between the serpent and Adam:

And the serpent came to Adam and Eve and gloated… you have done it now. What would God say about you now, he will cast you away from his sight. You are a sinner and not worthy to stand before him. You have shown yourself to be weak and worthless.

God will find someone else to replace you, he will not love you. You are not worthy to be loved or cared for. He will find one that is obedient. Even if you were the last person on earth. You should be ashamed; you are a failure. You are spiritually naked.

Adam and Eve were naked all along and it never bothered them, but the minute they saw themselves as unworthy, undeserving, useless and unloved, unwanted, they hid.

That is the lies that the enemy fills our heads with.

John 10:10 (NKJV)

10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

3.Voice of Truth

If this was a battle of rounds –

Round one – satan would have had the upper hand in the garden of Eden

Round two – satan would have thought the he was victorious when Jesus hung on the cross

Round three – Jesus rose again, although satan tries round after round, the final round is coming

Round four – satan is defeated and Jesus reigns forevermore, that is the voice of truth that we need to hear.

Casting Crowns song “Voice of truth”

Oh, what I would do to have
The kind of faith it takes
To climb out of this boat I’m in
Onto the crashing waves

To step out of my comfort zone
Into the realm of the unknown where Jesus is
And He’s holding out His hand

But the waves are calling out my name
And they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times
I’ve tried before and failed
The waves they keep on telling me
Time and time again. “Boy, you’ll never win!”
“You’ll never win!”

But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, “Do not be afraid!”
The voice of truth says, “This is for My glory”
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

How many know this morning, that Gods word is the only source of truth.

John 17:17

  1. Sanctify[a] them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

2 Corinthians 6:7

Now with the voice of truth and power of God—armed on the right and armed on the left with righteousness from God—we continue.

The attack from hell is real on our minds, ever day we are bombarded with thoughts and emotions that if not surrendered to the Holy Ghost, can keep us in bondage. One thing that we need to do, is to constantly pray and ask God, to help us in our thinking.

We need to stop giving satan the opportunity to keep convincing us that God hates us because of our sin. God in fact loves you, he hates the sin yes, but he is in love with you. We need to stop trying to deal with guilt and shame on our own and hide from God. Only when we come to God, and we hear the voice of truth would we be able to find freedom.

The more you hold on to your guilt, the bigger it becomes. Forgiveness is available today through Jesus Christ. The Bible says if you hear the Word, you believe it, you confess Jesus as your Saviour, you repent of your lifestyle by turning toward God, forgiveness is yours. You just have to choose to accept God’s gift that He is offering to you. The voice of truth is telling you that you are forgiven through Christ. The voice of truth is telling you that God is in love with you and nothing will ever separate you from that love. Will you choose to listen and believe the voice of truth or will you continue to allow guilt to hold you back from the life God wants you to have? What will you choose?

God bless,
